Montclair has two new businesses catering to the vegan palate, but you don’t have to be vegan to discover their deliciousness.
Elephant Plate opened at 10 Lackawanna Plaza in Montclair, with a mission to make eating healthy and vegan even easier. The bright storefront has rows of refrigerators filled with heat and eat vegan meals (as well as some cold offerings, too — don’t sleep on their yummy overnight oats!).
Whether you are a seasoned vegan or thinking about adding more meatless meals to your weekday repertoire, Elephant Plate has delicious, globe-trotting dishes that are perfect to pack for a workday lunch or to simplify weeknight dinners.
Most Elephant Plate entrees serve two, but if you are hungry, you may be able to finish one of these on your own. The Forbidden Rice Seoul Bowl was super filling — it featured tempeh and oyster mushroom, forbidden rice, edamame, bok choy, vegan kimchi, carrots, purple radish and sesame oil. In addition being vegan, it’s also gluten-free; each dish comes with breakdown of calories, carbs, protein, fat and sugar.
Another favorite was the Rainbow Glass Noodle Japchae — sweet potato glass noodles, onions, wood ear and shitake mushrooms, scallions, red bell pepper, kale, tamari and sesame.
Dishes are nutrient-dense, made with fresh, unprocessed ingredients and ready to eat in less than five minutes.
BOOMCHIA describes itself as a health food cafe specializing in super-food enriched bowls. Unlike some bowl places where you’ll find Nutella and other “treat” ingredients, BOOMCHIA is all about building a bowl that can stand in as a healthy meal replacement with 100% vegan ingredients. The bowls, featuring a choice of cold bases (blue coconut, acai, pitaya or matcha) layered with chia pudding and other fruits and healthy toppings (hemp seeds, flax seeds, cacao nibs), are almost too pretty to eat. The bowl we tried – with blue coconut (spirulina makes it blue but doesn’t change the taste) and pitaya, chia pudding, bananas, berries, dark chocolate granola, toasted coconut, topped with a drizzle of almond butter and honey was perfect — filling and not too sweet. What we love: So many options to choose from and no added fees for extras — you can fill your bowl to bursting with good-for-you goodies.
