Formerly known as Kok Kee Wanton Mee which was famously sold for an estimated $2.1 million to Jumbo Group, the rebranded Wai Kee Wanton Noodle at Jurong West 505 Market & Food Centre is still known among dedicated regulars to carry the same old-school wanton mee taste. If you fancy a plate of no-frills, traditional wanton mee with red char siew slices, it’s time to make your way to the west.
The stall is helmed by a brother-sister duo, alongside the former’s wife who helps out with front-of-house matters. The time-honoured recipe with a history of more than 30 years was passed down to the duo from their father.
There are only a handful of items on the menu, namely Wanton Noodles ($4/5), Dumpling Noodles ($4/5), Wanton Soup ($4/6) and Dumpling Soup ($4/6).
The Wanton Noodles comes with a handful of thinly-sliced char siew, greens, a nest of al dente egg noodles, and a dollop of chilli for those who request it. The clear sauce was on the sweeter side with a distinct fragrance of sesame oil and a hint of spice after mixing the chilli in. I was a little sad about the small hit of spice, but found the toothsome sauce to be quite satisfying with the springy noods.
I’ve always found the char siew at a lot of wanton mee stalls to be quite dry , but Wai Kee Wanton Noodle’s version was tender enough and sweet. It was just a little too thinly sliced to get a good, proper bite out of them.
The accompanying bowl of soup was light but still quite flavourful, and had a couple of wantons bobbing in them, which was disappointing given the price. The little wantons were actually really yummy, packed with a thick meat paste that was deliciously rich.
The Dumpling Soup held a handful of large dumplings stuffed with meat and prawn that brought forth a mix of sweet and savoury flavours in one bite. The broth was slightly sweeter compared to the one served with the noodles but still equally tasty.
I’d say what makes Wai Kee Wanton Noodle stand out from the rest of the wanton mee stalls is their moreish sauce combination along with their QQ noods. When it comes down to their wantons and dumplings, I would rather purchase the soup options just so I can enjoy more of those delicious offerings.
